The 78 years is being investigated following comments made in the month last in defense of the decision to appoint Malky Mackay the new Latics Manager.
The Football Association Twitter stream said: "following a request by Dave Whelan, the FA was granted an extension of the date by which he had to answer to his charge of improper conduct for media comments.
"The Chairman of Wigan Athletic now has until 18:00 on Friday, December 12, 2014 to answer the charge".
Whelan made the observations of Jewish and Chinese people in an interview with the daily The Guardian and despite apologising for any offence caused, was charged by the FA.
Subsequently, Whelan has insisted he will leave Latics Chairman should he be convicted.
