Premier League: Steven Gerrard welcomes Liverpool's Anfield expansion
Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard hopes it has "many more fantastic upcoming memories" at Anfield after the club confirmed the expansion of the stadium is set to begin.
A redevelopment of the grandstand will be the increase in capacity of Anfield by about 8,500 seats, which means that the stadium can accommodate 54 000 spectators.
Gerrard has yet to decide whether to commit to an extension of his existing Liverpool contract, which expires at the end of the season, but the 34-year-old is grateful that anfield will remain the home of the club.
Liverpool plans to leave the stadium for a new larger ground two years ago, news that the construction work would begin Monday has highlighted a commitment to long term to the arena.
Gerrard, who has spent his entire career with Liverpool, said: "this is very exciting news that we finally had the time of extending at Anfield." For me, it was all about your stay at Anfield.
"As much as I love the new stadiums, I'm more traditional and I love old stadiums as the Camp Nou and places like this, where all the history and all the memories occur.
"There were so many amazing nights and memories here, it would have been shame to leave all to do this have become apartments or houses."
