Premier League: Football Association charges Liverpool's Mario Balotelli over social media post
Striker Liverpool Mario Balotelli was charged by the FA over a recent post on social media.
The charge against the international Italy relates to a comment allegedly racist and anti-Semitic, he did on Instagram.
"Mario Balotelli was charged by the FA in relation to a recent announcement on social media," the FA said in a statement.
"It is alleged that the Liverpool player has breached FA rule E3 [1] in what his assignment was abusive or insulting or incorrect."
"It is also alleged that he is an"aggravated violation"as defined by the rule of FA E3 [2] that he included a reference to ethnic origin or color, race and/or nationality or religion or belief."
Balotelli had until 18:00 Friday to submit an explanation for his comments to the FA and having been charged, now has until the same time where December 15 to answer the charge.
A Liverpool club spokesman said: "We recognize that the decision of the FA and the player works through the process to answer the charge.
«While this process continues, the club will make other comment.»
The attacker himself apologized Monday, Twitter: "I'm sorry if I offended anyone. The position was supposed to be anti-racist with humor. Now I understand that out of context (it) may have the opposite effect. »
The 24 - year - old, who will miss the match of Liverpool against Sunderland Saturday with a groin injury, scored only twice in his 14 appearances for side of Brendan Rodgers this season.
